Want into the PlayStation Home Closed Beta Test? Here’s How to Apply

Today we’re announcing the expansion of our closed beta test for PlayStation Home to begin at the end of the month.

Later today, the PLAYSTATION Store will be updated with a PlayStation Home theme. By downloading the theme, users are submitting an application to join the PlayStation Home Beta test community. We will be using a variety of criteria including activity on the PLAYSTATION Network to determine eligibility for the Beta community. Existing beta testers have automatically qualified to be part of the expanded beta.

We’re really excited about this milestone and want our most loyal fans to be a part of the evolution of PlayStation Home.

In Europe, SCEE is also beginning their expanded closed beta, directly targeting consumers who have been most active on PLAYSTATION Network and PLAYSTATION Store. SCEE will be in email contact with their PSN audience very shortly.

PSN Europe May 15 update: Command & Conquer Red Alert and more

It’s another Thursday and that means another update from the PlayStation Store in Europe. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) is winding down from last week’s PlayStation Day event with a couple of classic games available on both the PlayStation 3 and PC Store today.

Both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable owners will enjoy a blast from the past as one of the most memorable real-time strategy games return to us with the downloadable version of Command & Conquer Red Alert.

The PS3 store has a lot of content up for grabs, including the classic action-adventure title Dark Mist. If all of this is too rich for your blood, don’t worry; the usual host of free videos, wallpapers and themes are still available, as well as a demo for Overlord Raising Hell.

The HAZE/Korn Mash-Up Contest: Where Nectar Meets Metal

Because we believe in fundamental values such as competitive spirit, team spirit, constant and relentless effort, surpassing oneself, and camaraderie, Mantel Global Industries is proud to announce a new event in our roster of games and competition. Starting April 28, 2008, we will begin the first-annual Mantel Mash-Up Event. This is a special project close to the heart of our CGO (chief gaming officer) Geoff Keighley, and he will be announcing the winner on-air on June 13 2008, on the new MTL Network news division, GameTrailers TV.

In this new and exciting competition, we are asking you, our proud and creative Mantel employees, to share your vision for the future. Share with the rest of our global citizens how Mantel’s Nu Metal K.O.R.N System has changed your life for the better. By using the key assets we have provided for you below as well as the anthem, “Haze,” apply the creativity stimulated by Nectar and submit your finished work to GameTrailers.com. Once all entries have been received, our panel of the brightest minds at Mantel will decide on the top five entries, with the final winner decided by the global Mantel citizens.

Our values are at the very core of everything we do. They are what we are, and why and how we conduct our operations. It is our honor to scrupulously respect all applicable laws and regulations in the numerous countries in which Mantel Global Industries has an activity.

Guidelines:

* Open to US Residents Only
* Limit 1 entry per person
* Download the pack of assets to begin the Mash-Up
* Use of original Haze Inspired Artwork and Animation is encouraged along with the provided download pack
* Videos submitted must be 1 minute and 30 seconds in length, include the Korn song, “Haze,” in it’s entirety with no modifications, and no larger than 200mb in size
* The Top 5 will be selected by the GT Editorial Team based upon style(50%) and originality(50%)
* The winner will be announced June 13, 2008 on GTTV. Winners will be notified by email so make sure the email address in your account is current.

PSP Remote Play, video download service

The PSP has acquired quite a history since its release in the US three years ago. You bet Sony has no intention of slowing down. A new interview with Sony’s Senior Marketing Manager John Koller reveals what’s in store for the handheld’s future.

Ok, so Portable Copy didn’t arrive with the PS3’s firmware 2.20 update, but Koller does state that Remote Play is a “big, important emphasis point for us” and that it’s “going to continue to expand this year.” Here’s hoping Portable Copy will arrive with the next update.

Another service that’s arriving for the PSP is a video-download service. (The Go!Video Download service was only announced for Europe, so he might be talking about a corresponding service for other regions.) When will this service arrive? “Shortly,” he says. Which holds well with previous rumors about the service supposedly nearing completion.

A number of other things coming this year are, in shorthand, the God of War: Chains of Olympus PSP Entertainment Pack coming this June, the GPS accessory revealed at the 2008 GDC, the long sought-for camera, and a keyboard.

And games of course. Let’s not forget about games. The PSP is still a gaming platform after all, despite all the great extras. What games are coming for the PSP? According to Koller:

I think we need to get more of the God of War and Final Fantasy types—strong brand umbrellas that have very good gameplay underneath and are unique from the PS2, but maybe have some of that storyline.

Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Launch Event Tomorrow Night

Imagine the drudgery of working for Shinra Company. Day after day, you do the accounting or tech support or whatever it is that helps the malevolent, Midgar-based corporation suck the very life out of the planet. Of course, there *is* a very nice gym on the 64th floor …

OK, so unless you cut down rain forests for a living, Shinra’s probably not a dream employer. But it still would be cool to have a nice, shiny Shinra work ID badge. Like, in case you need to rescue a ginger-haired girl or a large, talking red dog from the upper reaches of the tower.

And that’s exactly what you’ll get if you’re one of the first 200 people in line for CRISIS CORE - FINAL FANTASY VII tomorrow night. Square Enix is holding a launch event for the much-anticipated PSP game from 6-9pm at the PlayStation Store @ Metreon (101 4th St, San Francisco, CA). The first 100 customers in line will receive a special t-shirt, and other prizes will be raffled off in themed packages (take a look at the pics, enshrouded in mystery). I’ll be on hand, as I really want one of those Shinra ID badges. But if you’re planning on heading up to the 70th floor to give President Shinra a piece of your mind (or gun arm), I regret to inform you that Sephiroth beat you to it.

UK cosplayers set Guinness World Record

Cosplay is one great facet of games. Opinions range from people finding it weird to people who are delighted by the mere mention of the word. Nonetheless, no one can deny that fact that it’s definitely a fun activity.

As for the people in UK, they do know how to party as cosplayers. In fact, they wanted to prove something to rest of the world by setting a new Guinness World Record. The participants attempted “The Largest Gathering of Games Characters.”

Since there were no previous records that were set before, everybody there knew that they would easily reach such a feat. A total of 80 cosplayers turned up for this event. Various characters showed up as Sonic, Final Fantasy characters, Lara Croft, Tails, and a guy who really resembled Gordon Freeman from the Half-Life series.
