This Thursday, September 29th, we will release the latest update to the PlayStation Home client. PlayStation Home version 1.55 delivers a brand new start-up experience, updates to the Wardrobe and Furniture browser, and general enhancements that will result in improved stability and smoother operation. Here’s a look at what’s coming as part of PlayStation Home 1.55:

How to Apply the 1.55 Patch

If you are upgrading from an old version of Home (1.40 or earlier) then when you attempt to apply the 1.55 patch please wait for the orange “hard drive activity” light to stop flashing on your PS3 before commencing the patching process.

NEW FEATURES

Start-Up

• Improved the layout, design, color scheme and text of the start-up flow.
• The start-up flow will now display a variety of information depending on how recently you last visited PlayStation Home.

Wardrobe and Furniture Browser

• When you are browsing through a category of items in the wardrobe or furniture browser we now display the name of the object you have highlighted.
• There is an option in the Menu Pad under “Options > Settings > Personal > Clothing / Furniture Names” to change this behavior:

• Off: Switches the display of names off.
• Selected: Displays the name of the selected object only (default).
• All: Displays names for all objects.

• Name.
• Description.
• Image.
• Whether it is a purchase, reward or part of the default inventory.
• Date of acquisition (if relevant).

General

• Added an option to manually clear the cache of data that Home creates on your HDD. This can sometimes resolve problems that you might be having. You can find it in the Menu Pad under “Options > Settings > Personal > Clear Cache”.

IMPROVEMENTS

Menu Pad

• There is an option to view “Help” from the carousel on the Menu Pad. This is only available to new users.
• There is an option to “Redecorate” on the carousel on the Menu Pad. This is only available when you are in your Personal Space or a Clubhouse that you own (i.e. somewhere that you can place furniture).

Loading Screen Tips

• Different loading screen tips are now shown depending on how many times you have visited PlayStation Home.

General

• Continued work to improve stability.

We also have new games, spaces, and items releasing this week into the ever-evolving world of PlayStation Home. To start, LOOT unveils the updated Active Camera, which allows you to record videos in PlayStation Home straight to your hard drive. Additional functionality includes the ability to pause and resume recording for smooth in-camera editing and the ability to upload your videos straight to YouTube. Since the LOOT Active Camera will work in any of your personal spaces, the possibilities are endless! Make it. Record it. Share it. What will you create?

Also coming this week to PlayStation Home: Lockwood’s Airsoft costumes , LOOT’s new Office Furniture line, nDreams’ Ansada Fone personal space, Hudson’s Elemental Monster Lounge personal space, a handful of new Granzella clothing items, new Access All Areas/Alice Cooper clothing and furniture items, and a variety of truly awesome Codeglue items (including my personal fave – Cardbot!)

The Lockwood Showcase will be opening this Thursday. Be sure to head over to this new space and pick up five limited-time rewards!

Blink 182 – Neighborhoods
While a band reunion is not a novel concept, the circumstance that brought about the return of Blink 182 were the results of tragedy. After an acrimonious split lead to a series of different projects, (Angels and Airwaves for Tom DeLonge, +44 for Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker), a 2008 plane crash that killed four people and left Barker with third degree burns over half his body was the catalyst for reconciliation. A tour in 2009 was a major celebration for fans, but it would be another two years before new material would appear as Neighborhoods. “Up All Night” is a blistering attack of heavy percussion and guitar feedback that might catch long-time fans off-guard at first, but a signature pop-laded chorus along with the lead vocal volley between DeLonge and Hoppus is as familiar as ever.

For the most part, this means that the titles with musical peripherals will work with the other’s software. A few specific examples include: Guitar Hero: World Tour’s guitars and drums will work with Rock Band 2 and Konami’s Rock Revolution software.

And yes, you guessed it, Rock Band 2’s guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution.

Conversely, Rock Revolution’s drum set will work with both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2.

In addition, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 will both support the SingStar microphones.

We’re still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly.

Of course each of these great games have their own specific cool features that may not be compatible with the other controllers, but this is our first big step in bringing a level of compatibility to music games that is sure to benefit PlayStation 3 consumers.

The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.

Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

Animefreak345’s homebrewed coverflow application for the PSP, PS-Coverflow (previous version here), is finally updated and beefed up with quite a lot of new features and fixes. Users can now expect some new visual elements such as a visualizer and progress bar. The option to customize the colors in the PS-Coverflow user interface is now finally available as well.

An image viewer is also added, letting PSP users preview picture files using PS-Coverflow. Check out the rest of the updates from the following changelog:

If you’ve ever been to an arcade, you’ve probably seen a Stacker machine. It’s a pretty simple coin-op arcade game where players need to stack blocks to win prizes. It’s harder than one would think and so practice is imperative if you want to get a major prize. Enter PSP homebrew developer Sangheili’s new release: PSP Pileup.

PSP Pileup is Sangheili’s entry to the Homebrew Idol competition (other entries include Resonate and Xadrez) and well, it looks pretty promising. In case you’ve never played Stacker, here’s a bit of a primer. Stacker has a grid and a set of blocks will go from left to right until you press stop. The blocks will appear for every row one at a time and you’ll have to stop all the block sets on top of the one below it. Here’s the changelog:

This digital TV service can basically turn your PlayStation 3 Console into a Freeview receiver and recorder, which can allow you to watch and record free-to-air TV programs. Every program recorded on the PS3 can then be exported to the XMB and stored there with other videos to watch at your leisure. The service will be priced at €99, although no specific date when it will go live was mentioned.

In addition, PlayStation Portable users don’t have to feel left out since the video and movie download service Go!View will also be going live soon. Reeves mentioned that Go!View will be released by the end of June (the 30th to be exact) and will be available in either subscription or pay-per-view packages for PSP owners in the region.

According to the two, as of now, Final Fantasy XI is home to a total of 32 Worlds populated by 1.7 million characters and half a million registered users. Among these, the two continued, the server with most happenings is the Odin World.

“When compared with the average numbers of 55,000 characters and between 15,000 and 16,000 users per World, the Odin World in particular stands out with a staggering 70,000 characters and 23,000 registered users as of the end of March,” said PlayOnline.

While this is generally good news, PlayOnline and Square Enix cautioned that overpopulation is not good for any MMORPG. That’s why a free character transfer was offered to the residents of Odin. Aside from that solution, the developers also outline the following:

Removal from the list of destinations for a World Transfer or the list of Worlds available on the character creation screen, as well as continuing to provide free World Transfer services, are some of the ideas being considered for overpopulated Worlds.
